Toxic Picturesque
JEAN O'DRISCOLL + KAREN O'DONOVAN
This thesis proposes an ever-evolving bioremediation centre that constantly observes, reacts, and adapts to the red, formidable landscape of Aughinish Island. The intervention will follow a four-stage process, with the aim to treat the island’s contaminated media and leave behind a detoxified, picturesque landscape, using the four-stage process of: Digestion, Classification, Fructification, and Calcination. The toxic by-products on Aughinish have created a contentious relationship between the land and the people surrounding it. The goal of any intervention cannot be to change the past. It is impossible to return Aughinish to its original state. The instability of the toxic by-products which are abundant in Aughinish reflects the toxicity of the post-industrial world with which many rural cities and towns around the globe must contend.
Envisioned as a dynamic four-stage process, the bioremediation centre constantly observes, reacts to, and mimics its immediate surroundings: eventually merging with the existing red terrain. Different forms of inhabitations evolve during the cycle of observation, reacting on par with the life cycle of the refinery. The red mudfield on this live industrial site would become ground zero for how contentious environments can become vibrant and picturesque contributions to the natural and social worlds. The dynamic structure left behind acts as a confluence between the natural and industrial worlds, creating an amalgamated, innovative topography that is idiosyncratic to Aughinish Island.
